Studio 204 - Deborah Sherman Is an artist who is inspired by the study of nature, as embodied in the figure, landscape and still life : she expresses her view of life and art through what she chooses to paint, and seeks to describe what she believes is true. She knew she wanted to be an artist since earliest childhood and her life has always been filled with her love of art. She studied drawing and painting with a private instructor during high school. At University she concentrated on the study of the history of art while continung her work in painting. Deborah continued her study of painting at The National Academy Design under portraitist, Nelson Shanks where she was awarded a merit scholarship. Study at the Studio School expanded her vocabulary when she worked with the sculptor Peter Agostini. She received a Helena Rubenstein Fellowship to complete her painting MFA at the Parsons School of Design where she worked with Leland Bell, Larry Rivers and Paul Resika.
Her most recent series,"Dolls"are images of a toy that she played with in childhood. A doll is used by the child for expressive play, and her dolls reflect subtle modulations of feeling both past and present. The doll is a symbol of the emerging self. Ms. Sherman will spend time this summer as an artist in residence at La Macina di San Cresci in Tuscany. Her work there will concentrate on study of the landscape. She will exhibit some of this work at the Blue Mountain gallery in August 2010.
